Bank and Program Changes with CUBASE
In Performance mode you can set up Multi Parts 5 - 16 in addition to the actual Performance (Layers 1 - 4).
If you are working with STEINBERG CUBASE, you can try this out like this: Commands for the English lan-
guage MAC version are given in brackets.
1. Load Song Setup “SetIni” in Cubase format from the SETUP Disk’s “Setups” folder
This Setup contains pre-programmed Bank and Program changes for Parts 5 - 16.
2. Viewing the Setup file
Open Part 5’s Even List (“Bank/Prg5”) by double-clicking it. The three listed events comprise the BANK and
PROGRAM CHANGES and look like this:
Start Position
Value 1 Value2 Status Channel
(Val 1) (Val 2) (Event Type) (Channel)
0001.01.384 0 0 BankSelMSB 5
0001.01.388 32 0 BankSelLSB 5
0001.01.392 1 ProgChange 5
Controller 0 is set to (MSB) value 0 in the first line.
Controller 32 is set to (LSB) value 0 in the second.
Finally, Program 1 is selected with value 0 (conversion always required).
3. Changing the Bank and Program Selection
You can use the above scheme for your own songs. Use EDIT - COPY / PASTE to copy the Setup Part to
other arrangements.
You then only need to change two values for Bank changes:
The first line always consists of MSB value 63 for “Material Voices” for Val 2. You can leave it at MSB 0 for
XG voices. In the second line, Val 2 is always the LSB value required for the desired bank change. You can
look these up in the DATA LIST, pages 6 - 8 (XG Voices) and 11 - 14 (Material Voices).
Example:
You wish to select Program 25 “ObeStrgA” from Bank Pre08.
The heading of the table (Data List, page 11) shows the MSB value is 63 and the LSB value is 8. These are
inserted into the Event List in the “Val 2” columns of the first (MSB) and second (LSB) lines. Insert Program
25 for the third line’s “Val 1”.
4. Drumkits einstellen
Drumkits are normally assigned to MIDI channel 10. The Setup File presets this to “Standard Kit” (XG). If
you wish to use a particular CS2x drumkit instead (DATA LIST, pages 15 - 17) you will need to change the
first line’s MSB value to 63 and the second line’s LSB value to 12 (each in the Val 2 column). You can then
use Programs 1 to 22 in the third line to select the drumkit you want.
These Bank and Program changes only come into effect when all three events are played back in sequence,
or when they are click-selected in the EDIT mode. The CS2x must not be in EDIT mode during playback, as
it ignores all controller messages in this mode. If things don’t work as expected, ensure that the CS2x Parts
correspond to the MIDI reception channels (UTILITY - RCV-CH + PART/LAYER button). Don’t try to program
Bank changes from Partinfo, as you cannot enter the MSB + LSB there.
